Where New Year is more important than Christmas
Some Christmas traditions, which were kept quiet during the 20th century, have been gradually reintroduced. The Christmas tree tradition has been revived, but it has been linked to New Year’s Eve, which Russians celebrate for several days. Therefore, New Year’s Eve is more important for Russians than December 24th. Russians celebrate Orthodox Christmas on January 7th, a legacy of the Julian calendar.
