The world’s first floating city
Rising from the Indian Ocean, ten minutes away by boat from the Maldivian capital Male, a city made up of 5000 floating units, consisting of houses, schools and restaurants, is being built. Linked together and tethered to the floor of a 500-acre lagoon, these housing units can accommodate up to 20’000 people and are designed in a pattern similar to brain coral. The project has the goal to preserve and enhance its natural ecosystem, and represents a practical solution to the sea-level rise. The floating city, designed by architect firm Waterstudio, is coming to life through a joint venture between the Government of the Maldives and the property developer Dutch Dockland.
