Sleeping in the Machiavelli villa
Just South of Florence, in the heart of the winemaking region of Chianti Classico, lies the Villa Mangiacane. The name originates from Latin, Magna Cane, meaning “great dog”. The dogs referred to are Neapolitan Mastiffs, which were originally used to guard the villa. This 15th Century property was built by the Machiavelli family and whispers say that Michelangelo himself participated in the design. Sold by the Machiavelli family in 1645 and further damaged in the last World War, Mangiacane was revived by a prominent business man and entrepreneur in 2000, initiating a multi-million-dollar renovation, giving it back its former splendour. Listed as one of Airbnb’s most expensive offers, the property can be rented (10’000 Euros per night).
