Chéri Samba, masterly exhibition

From October 17, 2023 to April 7, 2024, the Musée Maillol is hosting an unprecedented retrospective of Chéri Samba, the emblematic painter of the Democratic Republic of Congo and one of the pioneers of Kinshasa’s “Peinture Populaire”, renowned for his bold figurative paintings that challenge and provoke, often with humor. This exhibition, “Chéri Samba dans la collection Jean Pigozzi”, highlights over 50 of his works, exploring and questioning various themes such as Africa’s position on the international stage, art history and the place of women in society. The Jean Pigozzi Collection is the most important collection of contemporary African art in the world, and for over thirty years has contributed to the international recognition of artists from sub-Saharan Africa.
