Switzerland
730 years of pact
Every 1 August, Switzerland celebrates its Federal Pact. 730 years ago, the communities of the valleys of Uri, Schwyz and Nidwalden, located in the heart of Switzerland, swore mutual support against any outsider who might attack or harm them. Since the 19th century, 1 August has been an occasion for the population to gather and celebrate. Each year, by tradition, a Swiss personality reads a few passages from the Federal Pact. This year, it is Timea Bacsinszky the Swiss Olympic tennis champion who will have this honour.
