Pharrell Williams, the new Creative Director for Louis Vuitton Men, made a memorable debut with a fashion show in Paris. His vision of art and fashion raises questions about the influence of "starification" in the world of haute couture.

Rihanna, Kim Kardashian, Beyoncé - the stars came together at Pont Neuf in Paris for Pharrell Williams' first eventful fashion show. The versatile artist has become the Creative Director for Louis Vuitton Men since February 2023.

Pharrell Williams is well-known in the fashion, music, and art industries and has gradually become a universal cultural icon. His appointment in February of this year marked a turning point for Louis Vuitton, the flagship brand of the LVMH group, as they sought renewal following the tragic loss of designer Virgil Abloh in November 2021. "His creative vision beyond fashion will undoubtedly lead Louis Vuitton into a new and exciting chapter," said Pietro Beccari, CEO of Louis Vuitton, upon his appointment.

Williams has had a diverse and successful career as a producer, philanthropist, and entrepreneur. He has won 13 Grammy Awards and received two Oscar nominations for his song "Happy" and as a co-producer of the film "Hidden Figures" (2016).

For his first fashion show, Williams chose an iconic location near the LVMH headquarters in Paris. The show generated buzz with its scenography and gospel choir. Alexandre Samson, curator of the haute couture and contemporary creation departments at Palais Galliera, the Parisian fashion museum, described Pharrell Williams as "an emblematic figure for Vuitton, with an approach to art and style that is extremely popular."

LVMH, the parent company of Louis Vuitton, recorded a revenue of 80 billion euros last year, with a net profit of 14 billion euros. The Fashion and Leather Goods division of LVMH, which includes Louis Vuitton, contributed to half of the group's total sales, generating 38.65 billion euros. Prior to assuming his role as the artistic director for the men's collections at Vuitton, Williams had already collaborated with the fashion house. In 2004, he partnered with his friend and rapper Nigo, also known as Tomoaki Nagao, who is now the artistic director of Kenzo, to create a sunglasses collection titled "Millionaire." In 2008, Williams collaborated with Camille Miceli on a jewelry collection.

While Williams' arrival is generally seen as a symbol of innovation for Louis Vuitton, some question the trend of "starification" in luxury brands and its impact on the world of haute couture.
