The king of sports equipment and the fashion house made their collaboration official this weekend.
Last Saturday, during the presentation of the latest Balenciaga Spring 2023 collection at the New York Stock Exchange on Wall Street, Adidas entered the very select world of the fashion house created by the legendary Cristòbal Balenciaga, and today perpetuated by the brilliant Demna Gvasalia.
Worn by models whose faces were covered in latex masks, pieces inspired by the Adidas brand's archives from the 1990s and 2000s made their appearance. T-shirts, suits, shoes, accessories, tank tops, baggy trousers and oversized hoodies were all marked with the iconic three-stripe seal, shamrock logo and Balenciaga logo.
The famous fashion house, which last year made its grand return to the very closed world of high fashion after an absence of fifty-three years, is betting with this collection on revisited models of Triple S sneakers, as well as on the Speed, presented in a sober and stylized version, which transforms the sports object into a luxury must-have.
In parallel to this collaboration, it is that of the French stylist Simon Porte Jacquemus with Nike which was revealed on the designer's Instagram account. This is a trend that began a few years ago with the sports world wanting to find value and a premium positioning by joining forces with couture.
Until 29 May, some thirty models from among those presented in New York will be available on Balenciaga's e-commerce site. A capsule collection will be available for sale immediately after the Wall Street show. Profiled to become collector's items, the clothes are priced accordingly: T-shirts sell for around 600 euros, sweatpants for 1,200 euros and leather hooded jackets for almost 4,200 euros.
This collaboration was not the manufacturer's first step into the world of fashion, as it had already signed partnerships with the brands Gucci and above all Prada. The famous Luna Rossa trainers designed for the world of sailing and inescapable in their grey and red tones had marked an important step in the "streetification" of the Italian house. And Demna Gvasalia has every intention of pursuing this same approach for Balenciaga, accentuating the brand's high-end streetwear trend.
The rivalry between the two giants of sport, Adidas and Nike, is now also being played out on the luxury market.

Fashion house Balenciaga has been named by Time magazine among the world’s leading companies.
The famous British media Time has selected the most powerful companies in five categories: titans, leaders, innovators, pioneers and disruptors. Unsurprisingly, all the GAFAs are at the top of the list, as well as tech giants like Sony. It is therefore a surprise to see in this ranking the fashion house Balenciaga, defined as the symbol of French luxury.
